One of the biggest change changes in this year's Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes in the form of the outer display. The external screen now measures 3.4 inches in diagonal length, which is the biggest we have seen in the Z Flip series. To put it in perspective, last year's Z Flip 4 has an external display that is only 1.9 inches in size. It even has a name of its own — Samsung is calling it the Flex Window. There is a lot that users can do with this Flex Windows. It now comes with a full-size QWERTY keyboard to reply to texts and messages. You can make use of a wide range of clockfaces, gestures, and widgets. Because of the bigger screen size, you can stack multiple widgets at once. Moreover, Samsung Z Flip 5's outer screen is much more customizable compared to its predecessor.
A new Gapless Hinge
Samsung has finally listened — the company is finally offering a gapless hinge on the Z Flip 5. This feature was confirmed even before the Galaxy Unpacked events, as teaser videos showcased the phone folding completely flat. Samsung has achieved this by using a new double hinge design called Flex Hinge, which it claims to be even more durable. The phone has the same width as the Z Flip 4 but is thinner, measuring just 15.1mm — making it the most compact Z Flip phone yet.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy
Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy as the rest of Samsung's flagship phones this year. This is a slightly overclocked version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with the Prime Cortex-X3 cores clocking at 3.36 GHz. It is accompanied by two Cortex-A716 cores and two Cortex-A715 cores at 2.8GHz, two Cortex-A710 cores at 2.8GHz, and three Cortex-A510 cores at 2.0GHz.This new CPU configuration makes the Z Flip 5 up to 17% faster than its predecessor. The new Adreno 740 and new NPU offer 25% and 20% more performance, respectively.
Other aspects of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 are rather repetitive. The phone sports the same 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate from last year. That said, the phone now has a panel that you can summon while using it in the Flex model (75° and 115°). The all-new Flex Mode panel features useful shortcuts, a trackpad, and a cursor, as well as music playback controls. The Galaxy Z Flip lineup has been using a 12MP + 12MP dual camera setup since its launch. And that trend continues with Flip 5. Still, you will be able to take better videos at night as the phone supports 4K/60fps Nightvideography. On the front, there's a 10MP shooter, just like its predecessor. The hyped-up IP68 rating seems to be missing as well as the Z Fold Flip 5 settles for the same IPX8 rating.Samsung has not changed the battery inside. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is still fueled by the same 3700mAh battery as its predecessor. Still, Samsung is claiming increased battery life with up to 20 hours of offline video playback on a single charge — banking on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2's efficiency. The phone supports the same peak charging speed of 25W.Color options for the Flip include Mint, Graphite, Cream, Lavender, Gray, Blue, and Green, Yellow. It comes with 8GB of RAM with an option to choose between 128GB and 256GB of internal storage.
