AMD has taken the opportunity at the CES 2021 to unveil what it calls the World’s Best Mobile Processors. These are the new Ryzen 5000 Series mobile processors from AMD. As opposed to what we naturally assumed, not all the Ryzen 5000 series processors are based on the latest Zen 3 architecture. Let’s take a look at the specs, features, and availability of the new AMD Ryzen 5000 Series mobile processors.
AMD Ryzen 5000 Mobile Processors Overview:
5000U Mobile Series
The new Ryzen 5000 Mobile processors are divided into two categories – H-series and U-series. The latter is targeted at slim and portable laptops that are not meant for high-demanding tasks. These CPUs are generally used in everyday laptops and business ultrabooks. There are three U-series laptops on the AMD Ryzen 5000 Mobile Processors and only two of them are based on Zen 3 architecture. All of the new U-series processors are based on 15W TDP.The entry-level Ryzen 3 5300U comes with 4 cores and eight threads whereas the top-tier Ryzen 7 5800U has eight cores and sixteen threads. The latter is based on the Zen 3 architecture and has a boosted clock frequency of 4400MHz. AMD also claims the Ryzen 5800U to offer 16% and 14% improvements in single and multi-threaded performance compared to Ryzen 4000U. It also boasts battery endurance of up to 17.5 hours on normal usage.
Moving on, H-series processors are meant for high-demanding tasks such as gaming and content creations. These processors have a higher TDP than the U-series and appear in bulky gaming notebooks and studio laptops. Until last year, all of the H-series laptops came with 45W TDP but AMD released HS-series processors that offered the same clock frequency as the H-series processors but at a lower TDP of 35W. The new series was supposed to bring the performance of H-series processors to a thinner form factor. This time around, the HX series have a lower base clock frequency compared to its H-counterpart.

5000 HX Mobile Series
And now, AMD has added a new subcategory inside the H-series mobile processors. All the processors under the new 5000 HX mobile lineup are based on Zen 3 architecture and have a TDP of over 45W. AMD says that this new lineup of processors is meant for “serious gaming”. Select HX Ryzen processors can also be unlocked for overclocking. For now, the Ryzen 9 5980HX is the most advanced mobile processor from AMD. The company is even claiming it to be the best mobile processor for 2021.
