Handheld gaming consoles have grown in appeal in recent years. The space is dominated by Valve's Steam Deck and a bunch of retro handheld makers. One such brand is
Retroid Interactive which has launched its new console, the Retroid Pocket Flip. So let's get into the specs, features, availability, and expected price of the Retroid Pocket Flip in Nepal.
Retro Pocket Flip Overview:
Design and Display
The key highlight of the Retro Pocket Flip is its clamshell folding design. It not only helps to protect the screen when not in use, but the hinge allows you to open the display at a preferred angle which makes it handy for gamers. The device isn't that heavy either, measuring 270 grams. But is a bit thick at 25.4mm.
The thickness is largely due to the trigger buttons located at the back. These are L1, L2, R1, and R2 shoulder buttons with analog triggers. Along with them, you get M1 and M2 keys which are user-programmable.Moreover, you get a standard array of button on the bottom half of the console, including D-PAD, ABXY keys, and analog sticks with hall sensors that also works as L3 and R3 buttons when you click them. The Retroid Pocket Flip is available in five color options: Black, Indigo, 16-bit, Sporty Red, and Watermelon.
Display
As for the display, you get a 4.7-inch screen with HD resolution (1334 x 750 pixels). The touchscreen's peak brightness is rated at 450nits. Likewise, it supports 720p HDMI video output for streaming.
Performance
Powering the core of the Flip is a Unisoc T618 SoC. This entry-level Octa-core SoC consists of two fast ARM Cortex A75 cores at up to 2 GHz and six power-efficient ARM Cortex A55 cores at up to 2 GHz. Accompanying the chip is a Mali-G52 MC2 GPU at 850MHz.
Likewise, the Pocket Flip runs on Android 11 OS and comes with 4GB LPDDR4-1866 RAM and 128GB of eMMC microSD card reader. To keep the thermals in check, Retroid has also provided an Active Cooling solution. The official image shows vents for the airflow, indicating fans inside the portable device.
Connectivity, and Ports
The gaming device relies on WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless connectivity. Talking of ports, it includes a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a micro HDMI port, and a microSD card reader. Retroid has also given two 1-watt speakers for the audio output.
Battery and Others
The setup is fueled by a 5000mAh battery. It includes an official game launcher and emulator frontend for launching and managing the games. The company also provides OTA support for incremental software updates and bug fixing.
